Community Assembly Organizing Meeting - Saturday February 4 2012

[improve]

Purpose

Occupy Portland’s Labor Solidarity Committee invites all people to help us organize a Community Assembly to create a people’s budget that works for all of us. We're meeting this Saturday at Noon at the 1st Unitarian Church (1211 SW Main) to discuss strategic outreach for labor, community groups, and Occupy, while also talking about visions of how the Community Assembly itself could be organized, amongst other things.

Our intention is to launch a campaign and action plan to achieve a city budget and spending proposal that addresses the primary concerns we all share, such as jobs, no cuts to services, housing, transportation, health care, education, etc. We plan to outreach to labor unions, community groups, Occupy, and the broader 99% to join us in a fightback against the planned city cuts to essential services, while putting forth a budget for the 99%.

Purpose

Each Sunday a special guest will guide us through a "Chakra Dance."

Among the best tools to evolve the spirit are the energy centers known as chakras. Chakra, an ancient sanskrit term meaning “wheel of light,” describes a complex human energy system of awareness.

The seven chakra centers are associated with specific areas of the physical body. Each chakra is equally important to our energy flow and vitality, and each affects all the others.

Developing one chakra while neglecting others only creates an imbalance, weakening overall strength. The goal is to have all seven chakras open, balanced and integrated.

Park Liberation Party

[improve]

  • Date: Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012
  • Time: 12:00pm until 3:00pm
  • Location: Chapman Square, Portland, OR
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

The fences around Chapman and Lownsdale Squares have finally been removed!

Join Occupy Portland in celebrating the return of the parks to the people.

What's happening?

Its a Potluck Picnic in Our Park! Bring food to share, musical instruments, art material and signs reminding the city of your freedom of speech and assembly.

Why

Most people agree that there’s a lot wrong with our world. We share your of frustration towards its many injustices and our politicians who don’t work towards the people’s interests. The time has come to say enough, to change this by organizing together, sharing resources, knowledge and ideas.

What better way to do this than in an open, accessible, public space with a history of political protest?

The city took away the public’s right to assemble in these parks for more than two months when they fenced them off. Those fences are now down and we must reassert those rights and engage the people of Portland in that dialogue so that we can affect real change together, as a community.

Other details
Please Note: It is not our intention to re-occupy or set up an encampment.

The Occupy movement has engaged workers around the world in activity against the ruling classes and corporations that exploit us.

Join us for a discussion of the militant tactics of 1937, the role of revolutionary socialists in the struggle, and the applications to our movement, from Longview to Nigeria today.

Play Healthcare Jeopardy! Boycott Commercial Bowl Sunday!

  • Time: 5:00pm until 8:00pm
  • Location: 6519 SE Foster Road PDX
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Do you really want to watch how pharmaceutical companies spend our healthcare dollars during a football game?
Did you know we give tax subsidies to these companies so that they can "create new drugs?"

Perhaps they don't need those subsidies.... they might be using them to inundate us with Viagra Ads. Which, if I might say, are much more uncomfortable to watch with the fam than Janet Jackson's nipple!

Maybe those subsidies should have gone to lowering the price of medication that is needed every day by the people right here in your neighborhood.

Did you also know that the U.S. and New Zealand are the only developed countries that allow pharmaceutical companies to advertise.... junk food for thought.

Bring some food to share and learn why our nation is torn apart by a greedy healthcare non system and find out what we can really do to change it. :)

Healthcare for the 100%! We don't need to leave anybody out! Everybody's IN!

February's event is a showing of Permaculture Research Institute of Australia's great movie "Establishing a Food Forest". From the PRI-Australia website:

"Join Geoff Lawton on a Permaculture adventure as he demonstrates how to grow a food forest from start to finish. Over 90 minutes of quality information to get you on the right track in creating your own garden of Eden.

We start with a 20 minute Permaculture Classroom as Geoff explains the patterns of a Food Forest and the essential principles of "time stacking" your garden with the right mix of support species that feed and protect your fledgling fruit trees into maturity. We then join Geoff in the field as he puts the theory into action, planting the seeds and watching the system grow.

We end up at Tagari Farm - established by Permaculture founding father, Bill Mollision - which was abandoned years ago, but planted according to Permaculture design principles. Would this Food Foest survive on its own? You'll be surprised."

Dharma Circle

  • Location: Friends Meeting House, Downstairs 4312 SE Stark, Portland, OR, 97214
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Dharma Circles invite us to rest in the ease of the present moment.

Frosty leaves as non-dual teachings from the world’s wisdom traditions open into the spacious field of the heart. Reflection, silent sitting, and silent movement soften our boundaries and open awareness of our essential nature, nearer to us than our own breath.

All contemplative practices and levels of experience (or no experience) are welcome.

The door is open at 6:45. At 7:00 pm we begin with dialogue and dharma reflection, followed by an hour of silent practice.

Feel free to bring cushions, mats, or whatever is comfortable for your sitting practice (some cushions and chairs are provided).

Grounded in the heart, our actions grow from deep soil to yield fruits that enhance peace, justice, beauty, and balance in all that we do.

In a tumultuous world, maintaining a spacious heart requires attention, intention, and ever-deepening love.

Sangha or satsang is created anytime we are present with others for reflection or practice in the space of the heart, in service of truth. Sharing that intention, our dialogues invite us into reflection on our deepest Being, Mystery, Emptiness, the Beloved.

Every faith or no faith are equally welcome here.

We embrace human nature just as it is, holy and broken, perfect and imperfect at the same time, and steep together in the timeless present moment, where definitions slip away.

Gathering in satsang, sangha, or a community of practice provides a rich common ground as we travel in the terrain of the Heart.

  • Location: Peace House 2116 NE 18th Ave, PDX

Every Tuesday from 4pm to 5:30pm the Peace House (2116 NE 18th Ave, PDX) is hosting a work group to help interested Occupy participants to find ways to establish functioning intentional communities.

Drawing on their 25-year experience of living in community, members of the Peace House will share ideas, resources and "hand holding" with those who would like to get started.

This is an exercise in mutual sharing. No one is an expert in how to live together in community, but together all can learn what is needed.

Bring your vision of what kind of community you want to live in and share it with us.

Together, we will work to bring that vision into reality.

Exploring the depths of sanity, morality and murder… with puppets?!

Tears of Joy Puppet Theatre presents Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart,” February 10th and 11th at the Winningstad Theatre.

Adapted from Edgar Allan Poe’s infamous short horror story, this production blends live actors, mask and life-sized puppets.

Three hooded operators bring to life the Old Man, a wonderfully bony and decrepit looking life-sized puppet. The old man’s caretaker, played by a live actor, continuously affirms his sanity as he fixates on the old man’s eye, descending into madness and finally murder. Come join us as we tell the tale of a madman and see what lies at the bottom of his heart.

Protest and Flyer for Wolves @ "The Grey"

[improve]

Stand Up For Wolves-Boycott "The Grey"!.
  • Date: February 10th, 2012
  • Time: 6:45- 7:30 PM
  • Location: Regal Fox Tower 10, 846 SW Park Avenue, Portland, OR
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

The new film "The Grey" portrays grey wolves, currently on the endangered species list, as blood-thirsty killers and could lead many to have a severely skewed perception of these intelligent, family oriented creatures. Sadly, this movie topped the box office last weekend, grossing over 20 million dollars. Join us as we pass out informative flyers to moviegoers. This protest will continue, every Friday, until this movie is no longer showing.

Other details
“The notion that wolves attack humans is ridiculous,” says Wendy Keefover, carnivore-protection director for WildEarth Guardians, one of several groups that has called for a boycott of the film, claiming it’s “inciting terror” of wolves in the same way that Jaws did of sharks. Most people don’t know anything about wolves. This movie will tap into their primal fears and create mass hysteria,”

Only two fatal wolf attacks have been documented in the history of North America, yet "The Grey" depicts wolves as eviscerating (hu)man-eaters. The result will be disastrous for wolf-conservation efforts.

To add insult to injury, the cast actually ate wolf meat.

"Liam Neeson and others cast members of the film ate wolf meat while filming in Alaska.

Predators like wolves are vital to the health of ecosystems. The impacts of wolves on prey populations and surrounding natural areas is one of the most popular topics in ecology and conservation biology today. The reintroduction of wolves in the Northern Rockies and other regions around the world, has allowed for extensive study of how wolves impact ecosystem health and functionality. In areas where wolves are absent ungulates like elk, deer, and moose tend to increase dramatically leading to declines in native plant species as well as the general degradation of forests and ecosystems. Studies have documented that when wolves are absent, elk and moose overgraze cottonwoods, willows, and aspens in key riparian (water) habitats. In areas where wolves have returned, ungulate populations are reduced by predation, and they are more vigilant and active, because of fear of predation, which allows stream side shrubs and trees to grow. This “landscape of fear” affects a prey animal’s behavior in food acquisition and modifies plant communities. With the return of riparian habitat, beavers and many bird species are supported. When woody species grow, expand in canopy cover, and increase in their spatial distribution, other benefits accrue, such as improved floodplain functioning, channel stabilization, increased shading, improved food web support, and an overall increase in biodiversity.

Without the presence of top-down pressures exerted by apex predators such as wolves, natural areas become simplified, less diverse, and unstable.

Although you are welcome to protest wherever is convenient and oppressive.

This is a creative way to involve all of our friends who still want to participate in the Occupy movement but don't necessarily want to go downtown. We are showing that the Occupation is more than just downtown.

We also hope that this kind of event will inspire creativity within the ranks of the Occupiers.

Know Your Rights Training

[improve]

The training will be facilitated by Lauren Regan, executive director from the Civil Liberties Defense Center that provides both legal observation at protests and gives people tools they need to invoke their rights.

STOP ACTA ! Worldwide protest

[improve]

Purpose

Global call to action to defend freedom of the Internet.

ACTA (Anti Counterfeiting Trade Agreement), an agreement that threatens the freedom of internet.

This agreement aims to formally protect intellectual property internationally. So far so good .. But the term "intellectual property" is deliberately vague. It may refer to trademarks, ideas or information. ACTA should therefore address the imitation of something subject to copyright. Suffice it to share copyrighted information to see his bail removed and internet access to prosecution.

To verify that you trade any content submitted to copyright, ACTA will strengthen surveillance.

The internet service providers should verify all data sent and received on your computer. Suffice it to cite a newspaper article in an email or send a piece of music to be taken by hand in the bag. The information will be sent to the author and you can bail at the request of a fine or prison sentence.

The agreement benefits only a fraction of industrial companies such as RIAA and MPAA (inter-professional associations representing the interests of the music industry and film).

ACTA is the result of their lobbying of governments.

A new democracy is baffouée and these are agreements for internet freedom-that we might be imposed by the unelected. This censorship could also permit to remove embarrassing information as is already the case in some countries where it blocks access to certain content, keywords or websites.

The only solution is the mobilization of everyone in the rallies planned for Saturday, Feb. 11 to say no to
  • Seeds copyrighted Prohibitions-generic
  • Internet censorship;
  • Restriction on freedom of expression;
  • Total monitoring of all our online activities;
  • Loss of liberties and civil rights;
  • Loss of internet connection for those who violate the new rules.

This law is not just computers, it will give full powers to companies like Monsento on agriculture ...

Corporations Are Not People

[improve]

  • Date: Sat, February 11
  • Time: 7pm – 9pm
  • Location: First Unitarian Church Eliot Center, SW 12th and Salmon
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Jeffrey Clements reveals the far-reaching effects of this strange and destructive idea of corporate personhood, which flies in the face of not only all common sense but most of American legal history as well.

Most importantly, he offers solutions - including a constitutional amendment to reverse Citizens United - and tools to help readers join a grassroots drive to implement them.

Ending corporate control of our Constitution and government is not about a triumph of one political ideology over another - it's about restoring the republican principles of American democracy.

Jeffrey Clements is a co-founder of Free Speech for People, a national, nonpartisan campaign to Citizens United and pass the People's Rights Amendment. He has represented and advocated for people, businesses, and the public interest since 1988.

NO WAR WITH IRAN RALLY and MARCH

[improve]

  • Date: Sun, February 12
  • Time: 3pm – 5pm
  • Location: Corner of SW Salmon st and SW Park Ave, Portland OR
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Stop the war of the 1%

We the people of Occupy Portland condemn any act or form of violence.
We believe that any problem can be resolved in a peaceful way, and we are against any future conflict against the nation of Iran.
We want peace on our Planet, not war and no more false flags.

The people of Iran and America do not deserve to be used as tools for the benefit of the 1%. We the people of the world will lose in this war and nobody will win from any side, except the very few people who are orchestrating this insane war.

For this reason we want to make a call out to all the occupations in the country to join us in a national day of anti-war rally and march event this coming February 12, 2012, to make it clear to President Obama and the government that we don’t want any war with Iran.

Going to war with Iran means more tax money will be invested in the war, that in education or health care.

Going to war with Iran means the possibility of future bigger events and possibly war with other nations such as Russia, China, and Pakistan. For the future of the human civilization and our mother earth, let’s stop this madness and make our voice heard.

Peace will come when all come together as one.
WE ARE GOING TO HAVE MUSIC AND SPEAKERS FIRST AND THEN WE WILL MARCH.

  • Date: Mondays
  • Time: 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
