HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!

Ruckus at the State Land Board

[improve]

  • Date: Tuesday Feb 14
  • Time: 7:30am until 12:00pm
  • Location: Oregon Department of State Lands Office, 775 Summer Street, Salem, Or
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Will you be our valentine?

Cascadia Forest Defenders are heading to Salem on the 14th to confront the State Land Board--Governor Kitzhaber, Secretary of State Kate Brown, and Treasurer Ted Wheeler-- about their direct hand in the destruction of Oregon's public forests.

In October, Governor Kitzhaber approved a plan that will nearly double the annual clear cut in the Elliott Rainforest, starting this year. On the 14th, the first land board meeting of 2012, the Governor will also approve the privatization of over 1,000 acres of public forest land in Southern Oregon. Privatization will leave the fate of sensitive wildlife in the hands of ravenous timber barons.

(for more info visit http://www.forestdefensenow.com)

CFD invites any and all who are enraged with Kitzhaber to party with us on Valentines. Come with signs, props, and costumes appropriate for the occasion. Bring a friend, a lover, *or perhaps your whole affinity group* to participate in rowdy, light-hearted actions!

Some logistics:

  • Carpool meets up 7:30 a.m. at the Growers Market parking lot, 4th/Willamette near the Eugene Amtrak station. Message us on fb or email forestdefensenow@gmail.com if you have a large vehicle we can borrow for a day.
  • This is not a permitted rally! Disruptive behavior may lead to your removal from the premises. If you want to limit your interaction with law enforcement, you are always welcome to come and quietly hold a sign or sit in the audience.
  • If you would like to plug in with an affinity group for the action, or if you are organizing something with your affinity group, come to CFD's next meeting: this Friday, February 10th, at 5 pm upstairs in the Grower's Market (4th and Willamette).
Get in touch if you would to help flyer or help us organize the rideshare!
If you are a portlander, email impstilts@riseup.net - 3 available seats!

This is an exercise in mutual sharing. No one is an expert in how to live together in community, but together all can learn what is needed.

Bring your vision of what kind of community you want to live in and share it with us.

Occupy 90210

[improve]

  • Date: Wednesday, February 15, 2012
  • Time: 4:00pm until 7:30pm
  • Location: Will Rogers Memorial Park near Hollywood, Ca
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

While Obama dines at a $35,800 a plate fundraiser in the home of a 1% TV producer, we will be one and a half miles away occupying Will Rogers Memorial Park in Beverly Hills to highlight the corrupting role that Big Money plays in politics.

In the aftermath of the Citizens United decision, it is expected that the 2012 presidential race will cost an unprecedented $2,000,000,000.

Furthermore, Obama recently announced that he will accept SuperPAC money, which enables wealthy people and corporations to donate unlimited amounts of money to political campaigns.

What does this decision say about our leader?
To whom will Obama be accountable?

The millions of Americans who are poor, hungry and homeless in this country or the 1% of the population that can afford to spend $35,800 on dinner with the President?

Occupy will use this occasion not only to condemn the role of Big Money in politics but also to initiate a fundraising drive to feed the food insecure in Los Angeles.

The money raised will support the LA Hunger Action Network's Veggie Voucher program which doubles the purchasing power of food stamps at farmer's markets.

Please join us and invite/bring your friends!
See you there!

HUGE SEED SWAP!

[improve]

  • Date: Friday, February 17, 2012
  • Time: 7:00pm until 9:00pm
  • Location: TaborSpace 5441 SE Belmont Street, Portland, OR 97215
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Let's get together and share seeds for the 2012 season! (See more event info @ http://bit.ly/AA2hh9 )

For the seed swap to go well, please do the following
  • Bring seeds! to offer into the swap. It's a seed swap, not a seed giveaway. While we'd like to focus primarily on vegetables, culinary herbs, medicinals and other "functional" species, seeds for ornamentals are cool too, if that's you're thing. Please make sure they're labeled as to species and variety. Please don't bring unknown seeds or seeds that are too old to germinate reliably.
  • Bring containers to take seeds home in (small jars, empty seed packets, empty teabag envelopes, etc.)

That's about it! Some masking tape, markers, and other useful tools for labeling seeds will be provided, but feel free to bring your own too.

TaborSpace cafe will be open for drinks and snacks.
There are a few top-secret door prizes in the work, maybe you'll get lucky!
Feel free to share widely. The more the merrier!

(Note: The way the seed exchange will work: ALL seeds will be placed out on tables, by category, and we will observe the honor system. If you have unopened packets of seed that you would like to share part of, please separate out what you want to keep prior to coming.

Occupy Solidarity Social Forum

[improve]

  • Date: Feb. 18/19th
  • Time: 8:00 AM
  • Location: Washington State Capitol lawn + Evergreen College, Olympia, WA.
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Occupy Olympia (WA) and the Alliance for Global Justice are hosting an Occupy Solidarity Social Forum Feb. 18-19 in the Washington state capital city.

The self-organized, social forum-type gathering is open to all occupiers and allies. (Read more at http://afgj.org/?p=1891)

Heard about Occupy Solidarity Social Forum (OSSF)?

Not the US Social Forum but inspired by the format, what the OSSF is is a smaller Occupy Wall Street conference to be held in Olympia, WA.

February 18th and 19th, Occupy Olympia is hosting the weekend of events, forums, actions, workshops and strategy sessions on and for the 99% movement.

This will be a mostly regional audience but the OSSF is being co-sponsored by the Alliance For Global Justice who is reaching out to Occupy organizations all over the US and encouraging their participation.

We think that Olympia, between the two power houses of Occupy Portland and Occupy Seattle, will be a good meeting place to have a face to face conversation that moves us towards next steps.

Other details
I want you to present a workshop at the OSSF. Register your workshop!

February 18th and 19th is not far away, fortunately there are plenty in the northwest with skills and knowledge to share.

This is the first national face to face since the Occupy movement began, we think that it will be a chance to develop the movement during a time when most encampments have gone and the winter weather has slowed us down.

This is a chance for trainings and meetings that can help make the whole stronger and weave together the strands of the movement into a cohesive fabric. This is a chance for you to get your message out to the rest of the country and build your network.

So please take the time to register as a participant and give some thought towards a workshop, training or facilitating a discussion. If you would like to table during the event please let me know.

Solidarity,

Bruce Wilkinson

Purpose

Free youth empowerment, leadership and activism workshop through Portland Parks and Rec

For links and registration, see our website: http://yeacamp.org/?page_id=584

YEA Academy is a free monthly Saturday workshop program for 12-17 year olds who want to make a difference in their community or the world.

At YEA, participants will learn ways to bring about a change on social justice issues they care about, such as:

  • homophobia
  • climate change
  • racism
  • animal rights
  • bullying

Like our flagship program, YEA Camp, YEA Academy’s curriculum is based on four areas we feel are critical for activists to develop: knowledge, skills, confidence and community to take action on the issues that matter to them.

From 11am-4pm one Saturday a month, youth have an opportunity to learn key skills like:

  • running an effective school club
  • fundraising
  • running a campaign
  • and arts activism

All while finding out about inspiring ways others are having an impact in their community, building self confidence, creating a plan to impact a societal problem, and making friends with other young change-makers.

YEA Academy is being run in partnership with Portland Parks and Recreation. Spaces are limited, so please register early.

Please note: you must enter the course codes below to find the “Youth Empowerment” course at the Portland Parks and Rec registration website. https://www.portlandparks.org/register/Start/Start.asp

Each Saturday is a separate registration, so you must register for each course code as a separate course.

February 18th, 2012 course # 365993

March 10th, 2012 course # 365994

Decolonizing Anarchism: Book Launch & IAS Board Event

[improve]

  • Date: Saturday, February 18, 2012
  • Time: 7:00pm until 10:00pm
  • Location: Red and Black Cafe 400 SE 12th Ave, Portland, OR 97214
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Maia Ramnath's new book is on the anti-authoritarian elements of India's liberation struggle, examining the history of South Asian struggles against colonialism. It is the third title in the Anarchist Interventions book series, copublished between AK Press and the IAS. Come hear about decolonizing anarchism. Copies will be available at a reduced cost.

"This is a stunningly impactful and densely researched book. Maia Ramnath has offered a vital contribution to our understanding of the long historical entanglement between liberation struggles, anticolonialism, and the radical movement of oppressed peoples against the modern nation-state.

She audaciously reframes the dominant narrative of Indian radicalism by detailing its explosive and ongoing symbiosis with decolonial anarchism" - Dylan Rodriguez

Also in attendance will be members of the Institute for Anarchist Studies (IAS).

Because the IAS is a 501(c)3 we have a board of directors, the policy making collective of the organization.

Board members will introduce themselves, talk about their organizing work and thoughts about contemporary politics, and attendees will have a chance to talk with them informally.

Please come, learn about Decolonizing Anarchism, meet the board, talk, eat delicious vegan food, and have fun. Beer and kombucha are on tap, and other drinks will also be available.

Other details
In its fifteen years of existence, the IAS has funded over 90 writing projects, giving out roughly $80,000 to individuals in 12 countries.

In addition to financing writers and copublishing books with AK Press, the IAS also publishes Perspectives on Anarchist Theory, has a speakers bureau, and organizes workshops and talks at conferences.

Twice a year the IAS meets to award $2,000 to various struggling radical writers to support their writing. For the first time the IAS will be meeting on the West Coast. IAS folks will be coming from Quebec, Ontario, New York, Philadelphia, Oakland, D.C., L.A., and Detroit.

Each Sunday a special guest will guide us through a "Chakra Dance."

Among the best tools to evolve the spirit are the energy centers known as chakras. Chakra, an ancient sanskrit term meaning “wheel of light,” describes a complex human energy system of awareness.

The seven chakra centers are associated with specific areas of the physical body. Each chakra is equally important to our energy flow and vitality, and each affects all the others.

Developing one chakra while neglecting others only creates an imbalance, weakening overall strength. The goal is to have all seven chakras open, balanced and integrated.

  • Location: Friends Meeting House, Downstairs 4312 SE Stark, Portland, OR, 97214
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Dharma Circles invite us to rest in the ease of the present moment.

Frosty leaves as non-dual teachings from the world’s wisdom traditions open into the spacious field of the heart. Reflection, silent sitting, and silent movement soften our boundaries and open awareness of our essential nature, nearer to us than our own breath.

All contemplative practices and levels of experience (or no experience) are welcome.

The door is open at 6:45. At 7:00 pm we begin with dialogue and dharma reflection, followed by an hour of silent practice.

Feel free to bring cushions, mats, or whatever is comfortable for your sitting practice (some cushions and chairs are provided).

Grounded in the heart, our actions grow from deep soil to yield fruits that enhance peace, justice, beauty, and balance in all that we do.

In a tumultuous world, maintaining a spacious heart requires attention, intention, and ever-deepening love.

Sangha or satsang is created anytime we are present with others for reflection or practice in the space of the heart, in service of truth. Sharing that intention, our dialogues invite us into reflection on our deepest Being, Mystery, Emptiness, the Beloved.

Every faith or no faith are equally welcome here.

We embrace human nature just as it is, holy and broken, perfect and imperfect at the same time, and steep together in the timeless present moment, where definitions slip away.

Gathering in satsang, sangha, or a community of practice provides a rich common ground as we travel in the terrain of the Heart.

Purpose

Fun Flash F29 Fliering RETURNS! 9pm every Wednesday in February! Coming to a neighborhood near you!

Fun. F29. Beer (or not beer). Friends in your neighborhood.

Here's the deal, in case you missed the fun: meet up at 9pm with a roll of tape, staple gun, or paste and group up for a fun hour of flash flier mobbing Portland with F29 fliers. Travel by foot, bike or car! We will provide the fliers you provide the fun. After an hour of fast flier activism (that means 10 o'clock) come back and hang out with Occupy friends at the local bar. What a great way to meet and socialize with awesome Occupy friends!

Wednesday 2/8 9pm
meet up at the Alleyway on NE 24th and Alberta. flier for one hour. meet back at the bar for fun social time!
Wednesday 2/15 9pm
meet up at Yamhill Pub on SW 2nd and Morrison. flier for one hour. meet back at the bar for fun social time!
Wednesday 2/22 9pm
meet up at The Vern (Hanigan's) on SE 26th and Belmont. flier for one hour. meet back at the bar for fun social time!
Last week's flier mob put up 1000+ fliers in just one hour!

1 hour of fliering with friends equals hours of fun with friends at the bar. It's a good equation.

Portland Action Lab will bring the fliers.

You bring the tape.

We all bring the fun.
