InterOccupy Working Group Newport Oregon

[improve]

  • Time: 6pm – 8pm
  • Location: TransAmerica Trail 35 Northwest Nye Street Newport, OR 97365
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

I would like to suggest forming an InterOccupy Working Group, if one does not already exist in Occupy Portland, to connect with occupations and strengthen our global solidarity.

Occupations that are in prime positions to produce and utilize these types of busses and initiate these mobile projects are San Francisco, Portland, Atlanta and New York City.

Coming from Occupy Congress where I camped along with occupiers from all over the world and the two camps of Occupy DC for about a week, I can say that we are ready for a venture of this magnitude.

Spreading the knowledge and physical resources necessary for the decentralized utilization of permaculture and alternative energies is not just a necessary part of the economic rEVOLution but, also, a major part of the social one.

I implore you to, not only form working relationships between yourselves and the occupations of NYC ATL and SF but, also reach out to Boston, Little Rock, San Diego and Austin. These are occupations that have a head start on sustainable farming and energy production.

This is a large task but, we need to move forward on these fronts and this is only the beginning. Please, write back as soon as possible so that we open a discussion between occupations, while we still have the means to do so.

I look forward to your response. tehShark4747@gmail.com

Dharma Circle

[improve]

  • Location: Friends Meeting House, Downstairs 4312 SE Stark, Portland, OR, 97214
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Dharma Circles invite us to rest in the ease of the present moment.

Frosty leaves as non-dual teachings from the world’s wisdom traditions open into the spacious field of the heart. Reflection, silent sitting, and silent movement soften our boundaries and open awareness of our essential nature, nearer to us than our own breath.

All contemplative practices and levels of experience (or no experience) are welcome.

The door is open at 6:45. At 7:00 pm we begin with dialogue and dharma reflection, followed by an hour of silent practice.

Feel free to bring cushions, mats, or whatever is comfortable for your sitting practice (some cushions and chairs are provided).

Grounded in the heart, our actions grow from deep soil to yield fruits that enhance peace, justice, beauty, and balance in all that we do.

In a tumultuous world, maintaining a spacious heart requires attention, intention, and ever-deepening love.

Sangha or satsang is created anytime we are present with others for reflection or practice in the space of the heart, in service of truth. Sharing that intention, our dialogues invite us into reflection on our deepest Being, Mystery, Emptiness, the Beloved.

Every faith or no faith are equally welcome here.

We embrace human nature just as it is, holy and broken, perfect and imperfect at the same time, and steep together in the timeless present moment, where definitions slip away.

Gathering in satsang, sangha, or a community of practice provides a rich common ground as we travel in the terrain of the Heart.

Every Tuesday from 4pm to 5:30pm the Peace House (2116 NE 18th Ave, PDX) is hosting a work group to help interested Occupy participants to find ways to establish functioning intentional communities.

Drawing on their 25-year experience of living in community, members of the Peace House will share ideas, resources and "hand holding" with those who would like to get started.

This is an exercise in mutual sharing. No one is an expert in how to live together in community, but together all can learn what is needed.

  • Location: SW Naito Pkwy & SW Ankeny St, Portland, Oregon 97204
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Occupy Portland invites you to Shut Down the Corporations!

Occupy Portland calls for a national day of non-violent direct action to reclaim our voices and challenge our society’s obsession with profit and greed by shutting down the corporations.

We are rejecting a society that does not allow us control of our future.

We will reclaim our ability to shape our world in a democratic, cooperative, just and sustainable direction.

We call on the Occupy Movement and everyone seeking freedom and justice to join us in this day of action.

There has been a theft by the 1% of our democratic ability to shape and form the society in which we live and our society is steered toward the destructive pursuit of consumption, profit and greed at the expense of all else.

By shutting down the corporations for a day we begin to recreate our democracy. We begin to create a society that is organized to meet human needs and sustain life.

Leap into Action on F29!

Occupy Portland called for a national day of action on February 29th to shut down corporations associated with the anti-democratic American Legislative Exchange Council, ALEC. Over 60 cities across the country will come together on F29 to shut down ALEC's corporate members.

Join us in Portland, home to dozens of ALEC corporate members, as we shut them down!

  • 11:30AM - 1PM Rally at SW Naito and Ankeny

Screening of Mother: Caring for 7 Billion, followed by discussion

In the past year the world population grew to 7 billion people. Human population growth (coupled with unsustainable consumption patterns) is a driving factor in a long list of global environmental crises, including climate change, habitat loss, species extinction, water shortages and depletion of natural resources. Yet addressing the issue by ensuring access to voluntary family planning, empowering women, and improving education can have positive ramifications for women, communities, endangered species, and our planet.

Please join us for a viewing of the award-winning film "Mother: Caring for 7 Billion" followed by a discussion led by Amy Harwood from the Center for Biological Diversity and Kim Lovell from the Sierra Club. Both women work to connect environmental protection and reproductive justice.

Say NO to ICE’s unjust deportations in Multnomah County!

[improve]

Hearing before Multnomah County Commission to pass a resolution supporting our communities’ and ICE Director John Morton’s demand for prosecutorial discretion on all deportation cases in our region.

Supported by the ACT for Justice and Dignity Network http://actforjusticeanddignity.org/ The hearing will address issues critical to public safety and immigrant rights in Multnomah County.

By asking our local law enforcement agencies to do their dirty work, ICE has forced the costs of federal immigration enforcement onto our local governments and their residents, diminished our public safety, and needlessly torn apart thousands of Oregon families. Help us make our voices heard as we support Chair Cogen and the County Board of Commissioners in protecting our communities and seeking accountability from ICE.

An Inconvenient Tax is a crucial and understandable exploration of income tax history and tax policy.

Corporate Zombie Hunt!

[improve]

  • Date: Friday, March 2, 2012
  • Time: 3:00pm until 6:00pm
  • Location: Directors Park in Downtown PDX
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Here's the idea

We get at least 100 people.

25% of the people wear suits/nice clothes but have thier faces painted up as ZOMBIES!

These will be our corporate zombies! (Less corporations than people! Each zombie will also will have a corporation name and logo. There will be some printed up to choose from on the day of, or you can choose your own.

The other 75% of the people will wear dust masks (they are light, cheap, and breathable) and white T-shirts that say "OCCUPY: Ending corporate zombiehood since 2011!".

These will be the "hunters", these people will also carry BRIGHTLY colored, CLEAR squirt guns, to find and squirt the zombies.

Mind you, the zombies can also suck you into their corporate greediness and you can also "die".

A few people have suggested that when you get attacked or get squirted you can simply lay/sit down for about a minute to represent the casualties of the corporate capitalist society! It's also a great way to give people a little bit of time to get away.

We will set a 10-15 block perimeter, anywhere outside this zone is outside the game, you can leave at any time and be safe from squirts!

This is a completely fun, family friendly event.

We will meet at Directors Park! at 3 PM (if you run on Occupy time, plan to be there at 2:30!) we will then get everyone in proper costume and have a grace period to disperse throughout the perimeter and the games will begin!

People should use creative freedom during this event with their outfits and personas.

Let's make this an awesome, fun, safe, zombie catching spree!

Purpose

Each Sunday a special guest will guide us through a "Chakra Dance."

Among the best tools to evolve the spirit are the energy centers known as chakras. Chakra, an ancient sanskrit term meaning “wheel of light,” describes a complex human energy system of awareness.

The seven chakra centers are associated with specific areas of the physical body. Each chakra is equally important to our energy flow and vitality, and each affects all the others.

Developing one chakra while neglecting others only creates an imbalance, weakening overall strength. The goal is to have all seven chakras open, balanced and integrated.

Workshop: Interactive Theater for Social Change

[improve]

  • Time: 1:00pm until 5:00pm
  • Location: The First Unitarian Church – 1011 SW 12th Ave. Portland, Or
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Theater of the Oppressed can be a powerful technique for affecting radical social change and helping to bring about social justice for historically oppressed and disadvantaged populations.

In this class, we'll be introducing and techniques and methods designed to create real change, both in working groups and in the world at large.

Depending on the group's needs, we'll explore working with issues of:

  • power
  • consensus
  • race
  • class
  • culture
  • gender
  • immigration
  • religion and/or sexual orientation.

Who: Anyone who'd like to learn new skills and fun, interactive techniques for moving towards a shared-power culture. Folks who have a strong commitment to social justice. Groups who'd like to foster more sustainability in how they work together. Folks, in general, who'd like to create social justice, peace and empowerment of people who have historically been oppressed and disempowered, and affected by prejudice and discrimination--people whose voices have too often been silenced. This could be a good start for a street theater group.

rsvping on this group is nice but not an official sign-up.

Please RSVP by emailing Eleyna at: efugman@gmail.com

This group needs 18-20 people minimum and a maximum of 40 people.

Cost: Offered on a gift economy: experience the workshop and offer back whatever truly makes your heart smile.

This is a very active workshop--come prepared to play and have fun. (All abilities and ages welcome)

March Forth!

[improve]

  • Date: Sunday, March 4, 2012
  • Time: 2:00pm until 6:30pm
  • Location: PSU Park Blocks, SW Park close to SW Harrison, Portland, OR
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Occupy Portland began in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street on October 6th, 2011. With a united mission, almost 10,000 people took to the streets to speak out against decades of abuses of power and socioeconomic inequities. Since then, the national conversations concerning politics has been majorly impacted as people around the United States have become more informed on a number of issues.

On March 4th, 2012, we will gather in an effort to continue to drive positive changes in the nation, and even world wide.

The concept is simple. Each person picks an issue they are passionate about and want to see changed. Then each person will do some research and create one sign with a fact about that issue, for example:

Homelessness - "There are 24 empty houses for every 1 homeless person in the United States."

My hope is that people will stick to facts, and if so driven, will put one solution on the opposite side of their sign.

When we gather at 2pm on the 4th, everybody will unite with a group which is related to their issue where they will be able to speak to one another about their ideas, experiences, and why that issue is important to them. People should also feel free to travel between groups if they see something that interests them, after all, this event is about the free exchange of knowledge.

At approximately 3pm, each group will step off and march together to promote a better world.

We may encounter people who disagree with what we say. That's OK, in fact, I encourage people to engage those people in a calm and intelligent discussion. On many issues, we may be able to find a middle ground and even a solution to a problem that affects all of our lives. And in the end, if that person truly does not want to have a calm discussion, that is their choice and they don't have to join.

There will likely be police presence there. That's OK. My intent is that this march will have a number of contingency plans for a wide variety of situations. This will allow the march/parade to go on unimpeded and will make our action flexible, agile, and mobile. These plans will be discussed at the 2pm pre-march rally. We will avoid engaging the police to prevent the march from getting side-tracked.

This event is non-violent and peaceful.

While certain officers may show up looking for a fight, it's my intent to deprive them of that. The same thing goes for provocateurs. They may wish to start a negative interaction with the police, it's my intent to deprive them of that as well. This serves to protect the overall message. It also serves to protect people who want to bring their children.

With that in mind, everybody is welcome. My goal is to attract at least 2,500 to 3,000 people to this event.

Things I'm specifically seeking for the event
  1. Clowns - If you have a clown suit/make-up...I want to see you in it
  2. The Disco Trike and other mobile musical systems.
  3. Creativity - Dress up. Be artistic. Express your message uniquely
  4. Volunteers - An event like this is only as good as the people involved.
  5. A couple of megaphones - If the crowd is large enough, I'll have a hard time reaching people in the back without one.
  6. Livestream coverage
  7. A good time.

Can't think of an issue or having a moment of writer's block? Here, let me help you:

  • Internet legislation and freedom of information
  • Healthcare (Universal, Single-payer, Public Option, Privatized...)
  • Foreign Policy and use of US Armed Forces
  • Higher Education (College) and Public Education
  • Corporate Personhood (Citizens United)
  • Economy and National Debt
  • Social Justice and Equality
  • Police Brutality (Facts only. No "Fuck the Police" / "ACAB" signs)
  • Campaign Finance Reform
  • Climate Change / Environmental Issues

Women's History Month Meeting

[improve]

  • Date: Sunday, March 4, 2012
  • Time: 6:30pm until 9:30pm
  • Location: In Other Words 14 NE Killingsworth, Portland, OR 97217
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

March is women’s history month (or herstory, though unless “history” literally comes from “his story,” “herstory” is just a pun).

So let’s talk about women’s history and feminist history! 2012 is the one hundredth anniversary of women’s suffrage in the state of Oregon.

The local author Ruth Tenzer Feldman has just got her YA novel The Blue Thread published this month, and it’s available at bookstores.

The protagonist is a Jewish teen living in 1912 Portland who travels back to Biblical times, when the daughters of Zelosaphad (or whatever his name is) ask Moses to let them own property. It’s a fun novel, even if you aren’t into Judeo-Xian stuff. (Full disclosure: I was one of the developmental editors. –Susan)

FYI, the photo on the left is of a once-popular American author, Gertrude Atherton, who wrote a fairly gothic novel called The Californians, among other titles.

  • Location: Friends Meeting House, Downstairs 4312 SE Stark, Portland, OR, 97214

  • Location: Peace House 2116 NE 18th Ave, PDX

Purpose

Every Tuesday from 4pm to 5:30pm the Peace House (2116 NE 18th Ave, PDX) is hosting a work group to help interested Occupy participants to find ways to establish functioning intentional communities.

Drawing on their 25-year experience of living in community, members of the Peace House will share ideas, resources and "hand holding" with those who would like to get started.

This is an exercise in mutual sharing. No one is an expert in how to live together in community, but together all can learn what is needed.

Bring your vision of what kind of community you want to live in and share it with us.

Together, we will work to bring that vision into reality.
