The channel started out as <nowiki>#pdxwebdev</nowiki>, founded in December 2008. While popular, the title 'web dev' turned out being exclusionary to the broad audience the channel founders were trying to reach. In August 2012, a name change to <nowiki>#pdxtech</nowiki> was suggested and adopted.
