Stop Walmart Grocery On Apple Way in Beaverton!

[improve]

  • Date: Thu Feb 23
  • Time: 7:00pm until 8:30pm
  • Location: Edgewood Down Retirement Community at 7799 SW Scholls Ferry Road, Beaverton, Oregon
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Walmart has pulled a dirty trick. Wally is sneaking in to Portland with 17 of these grocery only stores under existing zoning. Except, one thing they haven't been able to hide, the need or desire to be 24 hours a day. Without being 24 hours they aren't that interested in taking up space. We need your help to stop them! They are attempting to lease an old Zupan's store in West Slope off Beaverton Hillsdale Highway. If we can block their zoning we have a chance to make them leave. Do you want a Walmart in your neighborhood?

http://blogtown.portlandmercury.com/BlogtownPDX/archives/2011/06/29/list-of-portland-area-sites-where-walmart-is-actively-negotiating-for-new-stores

History:

In 2006, Walmart fought to build a 152,308-square-foot superstore at Southwest Cedar Hills Boulevard and Barnes Road. The conditional-use proposal came under considerable fire during hearings from Cedar Mill neighbors and a local anti-Walmart group. The City Council voted no on the proposal, saying improvements to the busy intersection would be too costly and would have greatly contributed to the area’s traffic congestion. After their proposal was rejected, Walmart did not appeal the decision or submit any new plans for a store in the area. Now six years later, Walmart stealthily moves in to Beaverton opening three new grocery only stores utilizing existing zoning code hoping none of us will notice them sneaking in to our community and forcing our local businesses to close.

As Oregonian’s we want companies doing business in our state that support our local communities by bringing quality products at a good price, but not at the expense of low paying jobs that keep workers in poverty and reliant on social services programs to feed their family and meet their basic health care needs.

Together, we can increase the pressure on Wal-Mart and stop their movement in to Beaverton. We can work together to protect our community that will be hurt by Wal-Mart’s presence, and most of all, we can refuse to buy products whose journey from the factory to the check-out line is tainted by externalized costs to workers, communities, and the environment.

With Wal-Mart’s cost of doing business so high, can any of us really afford to shop there? More and more, US consumers are saying they’ve had enough of Wal-Mart. In fact, as of July 2005, nearly 300 communities nationwide had successfully kept Wal-Mart out—a number that’s growing all the time. We have made it clear before that we don’t want Walmart in our community and we must do this again!

THIS TIME WE'RE ADDING SOMETHING FUN TO THIS EVENT
bring a non-twerp with you to get them on twitter (if they want) and teach them how to use it.

The ONLY purpose of this event is to celebrate our hard work and achievements over the last few months and to get to know our fellow occupiers in a fun and relaxed environment. AND- to introduce more activists to twitter. ♥

I love you all, and hope very much that you'll make plans to be there! :D

Non-tweeters are welcome of course- though as a modern revolutionary, I highly recommend that you get a twitter account! It is a very useful tool!
    • Not approved by GA- organized by an individual who simply wants to meet some awesome people with similar interests. It is my understanding that such an event doesn't need GA approval, since it is meerly social and not representative of the Occupy Portland group or movement.**

Ms. Chap will be joined by readings by local scribes such as Smitty Buckler, Cooper Lee Bombardier, and other special guests.

Sabrina Chap's got classical piano skills, the ballad lyrics of Tom Waits, the onstage antics of Phyllis Diller and the voice of a whiskey angel. Her sets are a ragtime stompin' good time, full of laughs, heartbreaks, and just plain good songwriting.

A classical pianist since the age of 5, Sabrina initially came to songwriting once she picked up her first guitar in college. Her first album, Bedroom Sessions, is a collection of folk songs written exclusively on guitar and recorded in her bedroom using Garageband." from www.sabrinachap.com

Purpose

Each Sunday a special guest will guide us through a "Chakra Dance."

Among the best tools to evolve the spirit are the energy centers known as chakras. Chakra, an ancient sanskrit term meaning “wheel of light,” describes a complex human energy system of awareness.

The seven chakra centers are associated with specific areas of the physical body. Each chakra is equally important to our energy flow and vitality, and each affects all the others.

Developing one chakra while neglecting others only creates an imbalance, weakening overall strength. The goal is to have all seven chakras open, balanced and integrated.

Dharma Circle

  • Location: Friends Meeting House, Downstairs 4312 SE Stark, Portland, OR, 97214
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Dharma Circles invite us to rest in the ease of the present moment.

Frosty leaves as non-dual teachings from the world’s wisdom traditions open into the spacious field of the heart. Reflection, silent sitting, and silent movement soften our boundaries and open awareness of our essential nature, nearer to us than our own breath.

All contemplative practices and levels of experience (or no experience) are welcome.

The door is open at 6:45. At 7:00 pm we begin with dialogue and dharma reflection, followed by an hour of silent practice.

Feel free to bring cushions, mats, or whatever is comfortable for your sitting practice (some cushions and chairs are provided).

Grounded in the heart, our actions grow from deep soil to yield fruits that enhance peace, justice, beauty, and balance in all that we do.

In a tumultuous world, maintaining a spacious heart requires attention, intention, and ever-deepening love.

Sangha or satsang is created anytime we are present with others for reflection or practice in the space of the heart, in service of truth. Sharing that intention, our dialogues invite us into reflection on our deepest Being, Mystery, Emptiness, the Beloved.

Every faith or no faith are equally welcome here.

We embrace human nature just as it is, holy and broken, perfect and imperfect at the same time, and steep together in the timeless present moment, where definitions slip away.

Gathering in satsang, sangha, or a community of practice provides a rich common ground as we travel in the terrain of the Heart.

  • Location: SW Naito Pkwy & SW Ankeny St, Portland, Oregon 97204
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Occupy Portland invites you to Shut Down the Corporations!

Occupy Portland calls for a national day of non-violent direct action to reclaim our voices and challenge our society’s obsession with profit and greed by shutting down the corporations.

We are rejecting a society that does not allow us control of our future.

We will reclaim our ability to shape our world in a democratic, cooperative, just and sustainable direction.

We call on the Occupy Movement and everyone seeking freedom and justice to join us in this day of action.

There has been a theft by the 1% of our democratic ability to shape and form the society in which we live and our society is steered toward the destructive pursuit of consumption, profit and greed at the expense of all else.

By shutting down the corporations for a day we begin to recreate our democracy. We begin to create a society that is organized to meet human needs and sustain life.

Leap into Action on F29!

Occupy Portland called for a national day of action on February 29th to shut down corporations associated with the anti-democratic American Legislative Exchange Council, ALEC. Over 60 cities across the country will come together on F29 to shut down ALEC's corporate members.

Join us in Portland, home to dozens of ALEC corporate members, as we shut them down!

Wednesday February 29th, 11:30AM-5:30PM

  • 11:30AM - 1PM Rally at SW Naito and Ankeny

Purpose

MAN'S BEST FRIEND IS NOT THE BIG BANKS!

This is a creative and PEACEFUL protest to draw positive media attention to our cause.

Who could talk badly about a bunch of God's most loyal creatures?

We will be meeting at the corner of 37th and Hawthorne, and protesting in front of all 3 banks in the immediate area...

Although you are welcome to protest wherever is convenient and oppressive.

This is a creative way to involve all of our friends who still want to participate in the Occupy movement but don't necessarily want to go downtown. We are showing that the Occupation is more than just downtown.

We also hope that this kind of event will inspire creativity within the ranks of the Occupiers.

So please join us. I'll bring the dog treats and you guys bring the creative dog signs...
