Google Fiber for Communities is the company's experimental initiative to "build experimental, ultra high-speed broadband networks" in one or more U.S. communities. In 2010 Google announced[1] plans to "to experiment with new ways to help make Internet access better and faster for everyone." In that announcement, the search giant asked asked "interested communities" to complete a "request for information (RFI)" for an opportunity to participate in the experiment.[2] The company claimed it welcomed "responses from local government, as well as members of the public."
After the RFI period closed, Google said it would publicly announce which of the "nearly 1,100 communities across the country" who had formally expressed interest in taking part in the experiment the company would choose to move forward with. Currently the announcement date is pushed back until sometime "early 2011."[3]
